LAS RESERVAS MARINAS son figuras de protección pesquera mediante las cuales se regulan los usos y la explotación del medio marino, con el objetivo de incrementar la regeneración natural de los recursos y conservar los ecosistemas más representativos.Dentro del ámbito de las reservas existen toda una serie de limitaciones de actividades, así como zonas de protección especial en donde se restringe totalmente la actividad extractiva. Éstas se ha comprobado que actúan como foco de alevinaje y proliferación de las especies comerciales en toda su área de influencia. Por tanto, las reservas marinas son, además de figuras de protección de ecosistemas y especies, instrumentos de gestión pesquera que permiten una explotación sostenible de los recursos.
la Dirección General de Pesca se ocupa de su gestión, con el asesoramiento de las Comisiones de Seguimiento, órganos integrados por representantes de las Administraciones públicas, cofradías de pescadores, asociaciones de pescadores recreativos, clubes náuticos, grupos conservacionistas y otros colectivos relacionados con los recursos marinos.Las reservas marinas existentes en las Islas Baleares son la de la Badia de Palma, comprendida entre el Club Náutico de s’Arenal y el cabo de Regana -declarada inicialmente en 1982, pero sin ninguna regulación efectiva hasta 1999-, la del Nord de Menorca, y la de los Freus d’Eivissa i Formentera -declaradas en 1999-. En mayo de 2002, se declaró otra reserva, la reserva marina del Migjorn de Mallorca, situada en el sur de la isla, y en el año 2004 se ha declarado la reserva marina del Toro y la de las Islas Malgrats, lo que ha hecho aumentar a unas 43.000 ha el espacio marino protegido mediante estas figuras en las Islas Baleares.

Dentro de la reserva marina se puede practicar la pesca recreativa, excepto en el área de protección especial entre Cala Figuereta i la Punta des Baus.
Seguirá la regulación establecida en el Decreto 69/1999, de 4 de junio, de regulación de la pesca recreativa y deportiva en las aguas interiores del archipiélago Balear, modificado por el Decreto 61/2002, de 19 de abril, con las excepciones siguientes:
Volantín y caña: máximo de 1 caña por pescador y dimensiones mínimas de los anzuelos, excepto para la pesca del raor, de 7 mm de anchura interior (seno)
Pesca recreativa colectiva: se debe solicitar autorización especial a la Dirección General de Pesca. Pesca del raor: dimensiones mínimas de los anzuelos de 5,7 mm de anchura interior (seno). Durante la época hábil para la pesca del raor estos anzuelos podrán también utilizarse para capturar otras especies típicas de fondos arenosos, asociadas a estos.

d) El ejercicio de la pesca marítima recreativa desde tierra con caña, fija a corcho o de lanzado, con un máximo de 3 anzuelos y una caña por pescador.
Queda prohibida cualquier otra modalidad de pesca o aparejo, la celebración de competiciones y la pesca desde los islotes rodeados por aguas de la reserva marina.
